How much of a time commitment is BodyHype ?

BodyHype is as much of a time commitment as you want it to be! We have a show each semester and you are free to choose how many pieces you want to perform, whether that is 7 or 1. Most dancers choose to be in 4-5 pieces. Additionally, we have mini performances such as Tigernight, This Side of Princeton, and This is Princeton.

What is the audition process like?

BodyHype holds two auditions per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. All Princeton students are encouraged to audition, regardless of previous dance experience. At auditions, you will pick one of two combinations (typically contemporary and hip hop) and you will learn and perform your preferred combination with some space for improvisation at the end. Our audition process is shaped in a way that allows us to see not only your technical skill and your ability to pick up choreography, but your personal dance style. BodyHype auditions are important, but they’re also light-hearted. We have fun at them, and we want you to, too! Check the events section on the home page for details of upcoming auditions.

What if I can’t dance but want to be a part of BodyHype?

Even if you are not a dancer in the company, there are definitely ways you can get involved! For every performance, we always need photographers, videographers, and graphic designers to help with our publicity campaigns and stage crew to help with the show. If you are interested in getting involved, come talk to any of the dancers!

Who choreographs the pieces?

All of our pieces are choreographed by dancers in the company! The best thing about BodyHype is that anyone can choreograph, whether you have experience or not.

What is BodyHype’s relationship with the dance department?

BodyHype is solely a student run organization, while the dance department is a branch of the university. However, many members of BH are active members of the dance department. This gives us another great outlet for training and inspiration, plus this allows us to interact and dance with members of other companies to share our passion on the stage. It is important to note that dance department time commitments do NOT interfere with BodyHype time commitments. If you have any questions regarding balancing BodyHype and the Princeton Dance Department, feel free to reach out to one of our many members who have participated in or are certificate students in the department. Below are just a few of our involved members:

  • Sally Menaker sm9796@princeton.edu

  • Azi Jones aj2390@princeton.edu

  • Sophie Main sm9425@princeton.edu

Is it possible to be in BodyHype and another dance company?

Yes, it is possible for BodyHype company members to be a part of multiple dance groups. Many of our dancers are members of other dance companies including Princeton University Ballet, Blasé, Triple 8, Más Flow, etc.

Do I need prior dance experience to audition for BodyHype?

Absolutely not! Many members have come into Princeton with zero training, and leave this campus as dancers, choreographers, and all around awesome movers. BodyHype considers dance a passion—and that’s something you can’t train for!

Why did you choose BodyHype?

All of our students will have their own unique reason for choosing BodyHype, but one key term that ties them together is family. BH is one of the most close-knit groups on campus, and the memories made amongst members truly lasts a lifetime.
